What if one day those who need an organ transplant no longer had to be listed and wait for a donor? The possibility is closer than you think. In the not too distant future, organs will indeed be 3D printed using the patient’s own stem cells, thereby avoiding even rejection issues. The first 3D printer that uses cells, hydrogels, growth factors, and biopolymers as materials to create 3D constructs mimicking the complexity and functions found in the human body is Italian.
